Our Story

lignuum loves trees.

We are a vertical tree business reaching from seed collection and propagation, through ecologically driven silvicultural services to milling and timber production focused on underappreciated endemic Australian species. The products we make from this timber are a joy to use and a pleasure to behold.

Each sale helps us to grow more and plant more - restoring ecosystems on currently weed-riddled pockets of farm land on the South Coast on NSW.

Our little nursery was established to allow us to plant species that were hard to source elsewhere, or only available with non-local provenance. We are interested in growing big trees, including big specimens of species that might typically be smaller statured or slower growing. As a result our seed collection efforts are particularly targeted towards obtaining the genetics of the best genetics that we can find locally. This means large trees with strong vigour and good form, not just the scraggly specimens at the edge of a paddock which are easiest to reach.

In addition to underplanting into privet or lantana control areas we are also establishing wide spaced cabinet timber plantations on our traditional grazing paddocks. The low density spacing allows for pasture growth to continue, provides shade and shelter for livestock, grass species, wildlife and even weary farmers. Our cabinet timber species are mostly local to the area and currently rarely planted at any scale or with timber production in mind. Look out for boards of White Beech, Red Ash, E. kirtonii, Scrub Beefwood and Toona ciliata in a few decades.
