Australian Red Cedar (Toona ciliata) has a special place in our heart. Its the first species that we ever started growing and planting with proper focus. The history of the species is fascinating, albeit sad. Logging of this species was relentless and unsustainable.

The truly huge giants are now few and far between.

And yet, there is hope. This species has the capacity for incredible growth rates. We have had success with plantings stretching from cool shady gullies in Wattamolla, to sandy slopes 200m from the beach in Newport on the Northern Beaches. Planted out in a suburban backyard in Leichhardt the largest has hit 5m in height with a 60mm stem diameter in less than 3 years. The toughest yet of our cedar children is thriving outside of its normal range in Wagga Wagga. The dedicated owners have been guarding against frost in these early years.

The species has proved to be hardy and versatile. As one of Australia's few native deciduous species we are surprised that it is not included more frequently in urban plantings.

All of these have been grown with South Coast genetics from seed collected by hand from a large number of individual specimens.

We have planting stock in a range of sizes, from 300mm tall to a few specimens above 1m for those in more of a hurry.

At present we offer these plants by pickup only from Leichhardt (2040) or Wattamolla (2535), but we are testing out shipping via courier for the smaller sizes. Please enquire if you are interested in having some shipped to you.
